Extremely rare satirical map of Europe depicting outset of World War Two. No. 30 of a limited edition of 150 copies, hand-coloured and signed by Cornelis André Vlaanderen, a Dutch graphic artist, who moved to Belgium in 1929. "That so few (examples) have survived may reflect the difficulties in secretly preserving documents that were so highly charged with the deepest anti-German sentiment through the wartime years of Nazi occupation" (Barron). - Chromolithograph with hand colour and pencil. Light browning and some occasional spotting, stronger at lower center, there a few small holes. Long diagonal scrape mark at lower left extending beyond the center of image; several small tear-offs to upper blank margin. - Accompanied by original typewritten key sheet in French, at bottom with the artist's name and address in typescript. - Together 2 sheets.

Barron Maps online. - Sehr seltene karikaturistische Karte entstanden kurz nach Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs. In nur 150 Exemplaren gedruckt, alle nummeriert und signiert von Cornelis André Vlaanderen, einem holländischen Graphiker, der sich 1929 in Belgien niederließ. Unser Exemplar trägt die Nr. 30. Die bedrohliche Lage wird durch die Illustration der Titelkartusche vorgegeben: Ein Skelett, in einen zerfetzten schwarzen Schleier und Helm gekleidet, ist mit einer auf Europa gerichteten blutigen Sense und einer Kriegsfackel bewaffnet. Im Zentrum der Karte wird Deutschland als Blaubart mit Hakenkreuz gezeigt, der bereits zwei Frauen, Österreich und die Tschechoslowakei, ermordet hat und mit seiner Linken auf Polen einsticht, auf das Rußland, gestützt auf seinen Bären, ebenfalls bedrohlich eintritt. "The map follows a tradition of satirical cartography that dated back to the mid-19th century... It is interesting to note the manner in which Vlaanderen draws heavily on many of these earlier maps for his imagery, especially many of the symbolic national characters: for example, the Spanish bullfighter; the pipe-smoking Dane; the Phrygian-capped Marianne, Dame Albion with her fleet of ships; the two guard dogs representing the Sweden and Norway; and the portly male figure that is Turkey, seated on his carpet and nonchalantly puffing on his hookah pipe" (Barron). - Leicht gebräunt u. stellenweise etwas fleckig, unten mittig stärker, dort auch kl. Löcher hinterklebt. Lange diagonale Schabspur unten links bis über die Bildmitte; oben einige kl. Ausrisse im weißen Rand.
