First edition. Rare. With woodcut printer's device, folding engr. map of the world and 3 (1 folding) engr. plates. Rare work, examining eighteen opinions about the origin of amber. - Broad margined copy. Faint browning, old ms annotations in some places. Bound in contemporary leather, gilt filet borders and edges, surface of the leather with numerous worm traces.

Meinungen über die Herkunft des Stoffes sowie seine medizinische und kulinarische Verwendung. Klobius "preferred the view that it was the dung of a bird native to Madagascar, the Maldives and East Indies, or possibly the excrement of a certain kind of whale. A contemporary reviewer added evidence from Purchas that spermaceti had been found in the head and ambergris in the entrails of the whale Trompa, when one was dissected" (T.).
