First edition. With finely coloured costume engravings of the different ethnic groups and a view. The first modern work on Afghanistan, the result of a journey of legation that E. made from Delhi to the Emir of Kabul in 1808. According to Henze, E.'s comprehensive view and psychological understanding have never been surpassed. - Some foxing in parts, not affecting plates excluding pl. I, maps slightly browned, small rep. tear to gutter of last 4 leaves, stamp of Maria Laach monastery to p. 92 and to title-leaf verso (with a bit of bleed-through), endpapers glue-shaded. Bound in contemp. calf, spine gilt; some scratch marks to covers, tail rubbed, small tear to upper joint. Overall a fine copy.
