First edition of Niebuhr's official account, containing the first exact maps of Yemen and the Red Sea. "A justly famous and popular work. (N.'s) accounts are probably the best and most authentic of their day" (Cox). He took part in the 1760 expedition for the exploration of Egypt, Arabia and Syria organized by Frederick V of Denmark and was the only member who survived the expedition. - With 2 engr. vignettes, 6 (1 col. in outline) engr. folding maps, 19 (4 folding, 4 partly coloured) engr. plates, and 1 folding genealogical table. The plates showing traditional costumes, views, cufic characters, coins and objects of everyday life etc. - Fine, wide-margined copy. Some slight browning in places, pl. VI a bit more affected. Faint off-setting to pl. IV and V, small marginal tear to 1 page. Bound in half-calf around 1800, spine gilt, minor wear to corners, endpapers browned, book block broken.
