With engraved title and 45 engraved plates, mostly double-page, some folding, including the large folding map of Japan. Translated from the original German text by Johann Caspar (Gaspard) Scheuchzer, the librarian of Sir Hans Sloane, who had acquired Kaempfer's manuscript and botanical specimens after the author's death. - Slight marginal browning, tiny hole to plate 19 from paper flaw. Lacking pp. 17-20 (= gathering E) of the appendix, else a fine copy with wide margins. Bound in contemp. full calf, rebacked and recornered to style.
